I don’t know what 2017 was like for you but for me it seemed to have happened overnight. I took a yearlong hiatus from the blog life, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t busy. Here’s a brief recap of what happened while I was away.
At the end of 2016 I got a promotion to a contract position on the team I’ve always wanted to work with. By June 2017 I became a permanent member of the team. This meant ya girl could now afford a few more luxuries in life since the permanent job came with benefits. That’s right, now I can book myself massages whenever these aging joints get sore.
At the beginning of the year I was invited on a road tour with the senior executive team as the ‘Writer in Residence.’ Mind you this was not the actual title for my role but it sums up perfectly what I had to do. Professionally speaking this was an amazing opportunity. It was fast paced, funny endearing and of course educational. To be able to combine traveling and writing together while getting paid is one of the first steps in my lifelong journey to become a successful Writer.
Get this. Last year I completed a 10K! This has been something that I’ve always wanted to do but was too afraid to try. Last year with the encouragement of a friend and my aunt we were all able to cross this feat off of our bucket lists. To say this experience was gratifying would be an understatement. At the end of the course I was literally in tears because this achievement meant more to me than crossing off one of my goals off my bucket list, it was a grand confirmation that sometimes the impossible is possible. As a person with a physical disability which oftentimes affects my mobility , this achievement mos def was a personal affirmation to myself that I have what it takes to go beyond my perceived limitations.
New Year, New Goals
So that was 2017 in a very condensed snapshot. 2018’s main personal milestone will be to complete the CN tower edge walk. Why you ask me? Well I’m terrified of heights and I think this may be the kick in the butt I need to get rid of this fear. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
When it comes to writing, I intend to focus on the personal writing side. Mainly finishing the first draft of my novel and continue writing more short stories-this time in the creative non-fiction genre.
There you have it folks, the best of 2017 and some of the knockouts to undertake in 2018. I hope you’re excited as I am to start completing your professional and personal goals this year. Until next time!
